A Story of Service, Strength, and Hope

If you’ve ever met Maria Entsminger, chances are she made a lasting impression on you. Whether as a beloved teacher, a dedicated coach, a wedding planner, or a passionate volunteer, Maria has spent her life investing in others. Her husband, JD Lorens, has walked that same path of service—retiring as a Cobb County police lieutenant and now serving as the Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation. Together, they have built a life centered around community, compassion, and unwavering commitment to those around them. Now, they need that same community to rally around them.

In June 2023, Maria was diagnosed with stage 4 non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. She was placed on the liver transplant list at Emory, and for a time, there was hope and progress. But after a series of medical setbacks—including multiple hospitalizations, severe weight loss, and nutritional complications—Maria was temporarily removed from the transplant list. Doctors discovered that a previous surgery Maria underwent more than two decades ago has contributed to her current state of malnutrition. As a result, her body is unable to absorb the nutrients it needs, making it impossible for her to gain the strength required for transplant eligibility.

The next critical step in Maria’s journey is a reconstructive surgery to correct her digestive function. Once completed—and once Maria is strong enough—she can begin the process of being relisted for a liver transplant. To date, Maria has endured over 90 days in the hospital across 13 admissions and more than 17 ER visits. She now depends on a feeding tube and continues to battle fluid retention, multiple paracentesis procedures, and the physical toll of a long and uncertain road.

Through it all, JD has been by her side, balancing work, caregiving, and the emotional weight of watching his partner suffer. Despite their strength, the financial burden has become overwhelming. They’ve fallen behind on their mortgage and are relying on credit cards and medical loans to cover daily essentials, medication, and co pays. And while JD would never ask for help, the reality is—they need it.

Let’s come together to show Maria and JD the power of community, compassion, and hope.
